Building Circular and Innovative Schools through a No Food Waste Farm-to-Fork Approach

CSDI works with communities and local partners to create practical, inclusive, and sustainable solutions that make circular living part of everyday life and drive related behavioural changes in communities transforming them. Our programmes help households and neighbourhoods reduce waste, share resources, and adopt low‑carbon practices that improve wellbeing and strengthen local resilience. By combining research, innovation, and community‑led design, we support people to build the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed for green economic growth. Together, we demonstrate how circular living can empower communities, reduce inequalities, and create healthier, more sustainable places to live.

Our Approaches and & Strategies

  1. Community‑Led Circular Living Programmes: co-design circular solutions including neighbourhood circular pilots, repair hubs, sharing libraries, community composting, and school‑based circular living initiatives.
  2. Local Resource Loops & Zero‑Waste Systems: We help communities build closed‑loop systems that minimise waste and maximise resource value through initiatives like community composting, reuse and upcycling hubs, refill and low‑waste business models, and mapping local material flows to identify circular opportunities.
  3. Wellbeing‑Centred Community Spaces & Nature‑Based Solutions: Circular living is deeply connected to health, belonging, and access to green space. We support building community gardens, biodiversity corridors, nature‑based wellbeing programmes, and green infrastructure in schools and community centres.
  4. Skills, Education & Green Jobs Pathways: We build the skills and confidence communities need to participate in a green economy. Approaches include: repair and resource‑management training, green entrepreneurship support, circular economy learning modules, and pathways into green jobs through schools and colleges.
  5. Partnerships, Local Networks & Community Capacity Building: Circular transformation requires collaboration across sectors. We work on cross‑sector partnerships with councils, housing associations, schools, and local businesses; community leadership programmes; and neighbourhood networks for sharing resources and knowledge.
  6. Policy Engagement & Global Partnerships: CSDI strengthens community impact by working closely with policymakers, council members and global partners to scale circular solutions by supporting local authorities to embed circularity into community development, wellbeing, and economic strategies.
  7. Data, Innovation & Evidence‑Based Practice: We ensure communities have the latest tech and non-tech tools and insights needed to drive long‑term change. Approaches include: designing digital and AI based tools for tracking waste and energy, community circularity assessments, innovation pilots, and evidence‑based insights for local planning and funding.
